What is barber beats? The vaporwave micro-genre named after one prolific artist

A micro-genre that began as an in-joke about one artist's music and now makes up about 18% of the archive's vaporwave family. Where the name came from, and what the numbers say.

Barber beats is the beat-driven corner of vaporwave: lounge-pop and muzak samples kept, the fog cleared away, and a steady downtempo or hip-hop groove laid underneath. The Frekvenci archive lists 1,881 releases with the tag, from 309 artists, and two of those artists, Undersaken and Haircuts for Men, account for about 13% of it. The name itself began as an in-joke around Haircuts for Men.

What is barber beats?

NTS Radio's guide to the style hears it as vaporwave's own raw material, lounge pop, muzak and glossy 1980s digital sound, with the haze lifted and a rhythm section added: downtempo, trip-hop and instrumental hip hop.[1] If slow vaporwave is a mall at night, this is the same mall with someone nodding along.

The archive's tags agree. Of the 1,881 releases, 852 also carry the downtempo tag, 816 chillwave, 472 lounge, 437 plunderphonics and 304 trip hop. Jazz appears on only 174, so the sampling leans on lounge and muzak more than on jazz proper, though jazz clearly turns up. The beat-music link shows too: 85 releases are tagged instrumental hip hop, 75 lo-fi hip hop and 73 chillhop.

Haircuts for Men and the name

NTS says the name started as a half-serious label that Aloe City Wrld stuck on its artist Haircuts for Men, whom the guide calls the genre's originator.[1] We found no second account of the coinage, and this one comes from a radio guide rather than the people involved, so read it as "according to NTS". For a sense of the sound, student-paper coverage of Haircuts for Men's 2018 album Down-Tumble and Die mentions sampled jazz bent with distortion, and blue-and-black artwork in place of vaporwave's usual pinks and purples.[2]

The archive adds a twist. haircuts for men has 101 barber beats releases out of 109 listed, but the most prolific artist in the tag is undersaken, from Serbia, with 140 of 145. Together they make 241 releases. Macroblank, named beside Haircuts for Men in the same student article, comes third with 50.[2] So the tag leans on a few heavy releasers without resting on one person. If the named artist is your way in, our If you like haircuts for men: artists to try next page maps his neighbours.

The sound

  • Lounge and muzak samples. The same source material as other vaporwave, per NTS.[1]
  • Steady, low-key drums. Trip-hop and hip-hop programming instead of the looped, drifting rhythms of older vaporwave.
  • Warmth over distortion. Less tape damage, more clean mixing.
  • Melancholy by default. Greason calls vaporwave in general an emotional genre in which feeling builds slowly instead of being stated.[2]
  • Long records. Of the tag's releases, 1,362 are albums, 322 EPs and just 66 singles.

For the wider family tree, Bandcamp Daily's 2016 map of vaporwave sub-genres remains the best overview; barber beats is a later arrival and is not on it.[3] Our What is vaporwave? A guide to the internet's slowed-down mall music picks the story up from there, and Synthwave vs vaporwave: same neon, different music explains why none of this is synthwave.

The yearly counts roughly double: 28 releases in 2019, 57 in 2020, 102 in 2021, 219 in 2022, 381 in 2023 and a peak of 488 in 2024. Two caveats. Tags on MusicBrainz and Discogs are community-applied, and a popular tag attracts more tagging, which can inflate recent counts. And much of the later growth comes from tape and digital labels that release many albums, as the label chart shows.

Halcyon Tapes leads with 65 releases, then No Problema Tapes with 53, and Genom Records and Dreamcorp. Records Inc. with 44 each. Several are almost pure barber beats: Halcyon Tapes has 65 of its 75 listed releases in the tag, Genom Records 44 of 47, and Celadon Plaza 38 of 45. Aloe City Wrld, the label NTS ties to the name, has 34 tagged releases of 57, and sister label Aloe City Records 17 of 39. And 555 releases are self-released, nearly 30% of the tag.

Country is known for 78% of the releases. The United States leads with 630, Serbia follows with 140 (all of them Undersaken), then Mexico with 89, Brazil with 73 and Canada with 71.

Next to slushwave and mallsoft

Slushwave, vaporwave stretched into near-ambient washes, appears on 366 barber beats releases, and ambient on 329. The difference is rhythm: those tags drift, while barber beats keeps a groove. If you like the beat-driven end of vaporwave, start here; if you want the floating end, try What is slushwave? Vaporwave stretched into ambient or What is mallsoft? The sound of an empty shopping mall. Chile's Mabisyo shows the crossover: 40 of the artist's 47 listed releases are barber beats, while a handful sit in What is vaportrap? When vaporwave met trap drums, the other vaporwave branch with a drum kit.

Because this is a young community tag, the edges are still being drawn. One listener's barber beats record is another's plain vaporwave, and neither is wrong.

Quick answers

Is barber beats the same as lo-fi hip hop?

No, though they overlap. Only 75 barber beats releases carry the lo-fi hip hop tag, and 73 carry chillhop. Barber beats starts from vaporwave's samples; lo-fi hip hop usually does not.

Is it named after an actual barber shop?

The only account we found says the name was a half-joking label for the music of Haircuts for Men, applied by his label.[1]

Why are there so many releases?

A handful of artists and tape labels publish a lot, and the tag is young and popular. The 1,881 releases come from 309 artists, with 241 of them from two names. Browse the full list by label or year.
