25 essential synthwave artists, and where to start with each

No ranking, because no honest ranking exists. Twenty-five artists grouped by what they sound like, with catalogue size from our archive and one record to start on.

There is no honest ranking of the best synthwave artists, so this page skips one. It gives you 25 names in six groups, each with its catalogue size and years in the Frekvenci archive, and one record to start on. The archive lists 3,756 synthwave artists. These 25 are the ones that soundtracks, interviews and published lists keep naming, plus a few picked for the size and spread of their catalogue.

How the 25 were picked

We looked for three things in order. Did the artist appear in the story we could source: a film or game score (Drive, Blood Dragon, Kung Fury, Stranger Things), a best-of list or their own interview? Does the archive hold enough of their work to start somewhere? Does each new name add a corner of the sound that the earlier ones leave out? The first test favours the famous; the third corrects for it.

Counts are listed releases in the archive (MusicBrainz and Discogs data, music with a listen link), with the first and last year on file. A year can be a reissue date, and country is known for only part of the archive.

The founders

These five sit near the start of the story: the French and Western European blogs of the mid-2000s, then Swedish, Canadian and American labels.[1]

The breakout generation

These artists reached beyond the scene through games, television and big-label deals.

The dark side

Heavier artists, closer to horror film and metal. The tag count and history are in What is darksynth? The heavy, horror-lit side of synthwave.

The dreamers

  • Timecop1983 (Netherlands, 23 releases, 2013 to 2023). Jordy Leenaerts, from Eindhoven, says Mitch Murder and the Drive soundtrack pointed him towards 1980s-style music.[4] Start with Reflections; If you like Timecop1983: artists to try next lists neighbours.
  • Waveshaper (Sweden, 4 releases, 2014 to 2022). Tom Andersson works with hardware, including the ARP 2600, Roland Jupiter-4 and Korg MS-20,[11] and Station Nova was No. 4 on NewRetroWave's 2016 list.[7] Start with Retro Future.
  • Michael Oakley (United Kingdom, 9 releases, 2017 to 2023). Releases on TimeSlave Recordings and NewRetroWave. Start with California. He is here for the size and steadiness of his catalogue.

Newer names

"New" is relative. Every artist here has a decade or more of releases. The newest names in the archive mostly aren't on these lists, because published lists lag the catalogue by years.

Notice who is missing from the top: Kavinsky has 10 listed releases and College 8. The records people name most are not from the biggest catalogues. Meanwhile the busiest artists in the archive, such as Makeup and Vanity Set with 131 synthwave-family releases, are not on this page, because the sources we used do not make them famous. Counting is not the same as importance.

Which door suits you?

Start from what you already like. If you came through the Drive soundtrack, begin with Kavinsky and College, and look at Italians Do It Better, the label behind the Chromatics and Desire songs that sat in the same film; its page explains the link. If you like film scores, go to Survive, Power Glove and Mitch Murder. If you want metal energy, take Carpenter Brut and Perturbator. If you want night-driving instrumentals, Lazerhawk and Waveshaper. For songs with singers, The Midnight and FM-84 lead into Synthpop and synthwave: where the 1980s sound meets the revival.

Labels are another way in. NewRetroWave and Rosso Corsa Records each connect several artists above, and the genre guides give each sound its own context: Retrowave: the name, the sound and where it overlaps synthwave, Outrun music: the racing-game sound of synthwave and Dreamwave: synthwave's soft, nostalgic side. If you were drawn by the Japanese side, try Future funk: vaporwave's dance floor, explained with If you like Night Tempo: artists to try next, or the barber-beats corner via If you like haircuts for men: artists to try next. Neither is synthwave, but they share the same listeners.
