If you like Lazerhawk: artists to try next

Lazerhawk's Redline arrived before most of the scene had a name. If you want more of that first-wave sound, start with his label and work outward.

Only two other artists in the Frekvenci archive share Lazerhawk's label, Rosso Corsa Records: Lost Years and Betamaxx. They are the obvious place to start. Beyond them, the retrowave tag brings in the first-wave crowd around Fury Weekend, Robert Parker and Volkor X, plus a few dream-pop and horror-leaning detours.

Three albums, three moods

Lazerhawk is Garrett Hays of Austin, Texas, and a founding member of Rosso Corsa Records, according to a 2017 NewRetroWave retrospective.[1] The archive dates his debut Redline to 2010; an Echoes and Dust review of a later record gives 2011, so treat the exact year as uncertain.[2] NewRetroWave calls Redline a high-octane thrill ride.[1]

What he did next explains why he is worth following. Skull and Shark (2013) is described as a horror-inspired record with hard-rock guitar over classic synths.[1] Dreamrider (18 January 2017) is slower and more pensive, which Echoes and Dust places nearer Kavinsky and M83, with GUNSHIP as the one vocal guest.[2] So Lazerhawk moves between racing music, horror and dream pop on one production style, and the right neighbour depends on which of those you want.

The archive lists 6 Lazerhawk releases from 2010 to 2017. Five are on Rosso Corsa Records, one is self-released, and the albums are Redline, Visitors, Skull and Shark and Dreamrider. The label's history is on our Rosso Corsa Records: label profile and where to start page.

The label-mates

  • Lost Years (Sweden, 5 releases, 2016–2021) is Magnus Larsson, who told Vehlinggo he is "kinda old school" and prefers playing instruments live; the interview ties him to Rosso Corsa and to the Kung Fury soundtrack.[3] His archive entry is the 2021 album Black Waves.
  • Betamaxx (US, 16 releases, 2012–2026) shares the label too. His 2026 album Chilling in America is filed under retrowave.

Rosso Corsa's other famous name has a page of his own: If you like Mitch Murder: artists to try next.

First-wave company

The next layer shares the retrowave tag and an era rather than a label. Fury Weekend (Belarus, 32 releases, 2016–2024) has Million Flares and Starlights on FiXT Neon. Robert Parker (Sweden, 16 releases, 2014–2020) is a Swedish retrowave act, and Club 707 is on Playmaker. Volkor X (France, 24 releases, 2015–2023) has The Loop. For the driving-themed strand of the same sound, see Outrun music: the racing-game sound of synthwave, and for how the terms overlap, Outrun vs retrowave vs synthwave: are they the same?.

If you liked Dreamrider

Dream pop is the thread. GUNSHIP (UK, 18 releases, 2015–2025) is the guest on that record; the archive lists a 2025 EP, Tech Noir Timelines, as darkwave, and their circle is on If you like GUNSHIP: artists to try next. Magic Sword (US, 13 releases) has the single OMNI. Glass Apple Bonzai (Canada, 18 releases, 2014–2025) has Bag of Bones, on Distortion Productions. Emil Rottmayer (UK, 23 releases, 2014–2026) is tagged retrowave: try Oblivion.

If you liked Skull and Shark

For the horror side, the archive's retrowave group includes GosT (US, 14 releases), whose album Prophecy is on Metal Blade Records, and Perturbator, whose 2025 album Age Of Aquarius is a recent entry from the same retrowave group. Smaller catalogues include Firechild (Sweden, 9 releases) with The White Whale and Cluster Buster (Norway, 6 releases) with Max Malevolence.

Lazerhawk's archive tags are broad (retrowave, synth-pop, dreamwave, cyberpunk), and "retrowave" and "outrun" overlap in the data, so the label link is the most reliable thread. Our Retrowave: the name, the sound and where it overlaps synthwave gives the context, and 25 essential synthwave artists, and where to start with each places him in the scene. The driving end of the archive belongs on the Night Drive station (92.0 FM); for the vocal, dreamier side, try the Pop station (90.7 FM). You can also browse all outrun releases by year.

  2. His horror-leaning concept record from 2013.
  3. The slower, warmer 2017 record.
