If you like Macintosh Plus: artists to try next

Floral Shoppe is the record most people mean when they say vaporwave. Where you go next depends on which part you liked, so here is a map with records.

Which Floral Shoppe did you love? If it was the slowed, looped samples, try PZA and waterfront dining. If it was the empty-mall feeling, try Hantasi or Corp. If it was the pop in it, haircuts for men puts a beat under the same idea. The Frekvenci archive lists only five Macintosh Plus releases, so most of the answer lies in the neighbouring catalogues.

The record behind the question

Macintosh Plus is one of the aliases of Ramona Xavier, who also records as Vektroid.[2] Floral Shoppe first appeared on cassette in December 2011 on Beer On The Rug.[1] Portland Monthly says it opens with a slowed Sade sample, and sets that technique beside Oneohtrix Point Never's 2010 Eccojams.[2] Tiny Mix Tapes placed the record 6th on its 2012 year-end list and called it "a new cyber-pop unconscious".[1] A physical copy sold online for $1,300 in 2018, a price Portland Monthly sets against vaporwave's anti-consumer streak.[2]

Bandcamp Daily's 2016 map of the genre treats the eccojam, an old song looped, slowed and echoed, as the template for most of what followed.[3] That lens tells you which branch to head into.

The archive lists 5 Macintosh Plus releases between 2011 and 2021: Floral Shoppe, the 2015 compilation FLORAL SHOPPE 2, two singles from 2019, and a 2021 mix on QINGDAO MARKET. The tags are plunderphonics and vaporwave. For scale, here is how the whole family divides:

If you liked the loops

Plunderphonics is the tag Macintosh Plus shares most often with its neighbours, a name for music assembled from other recordings, and it keeps closest to the eccojam template.

If you liked the empty mall

Mallsoft, in Bandcamp Daily's description, is spacious ambient music set in an imagined shopping mall, often using field recordings.[3] Hantasi (US, 21 releases) has Vacant Places II, filed as mallsoft. 猫 シ Corp. (Netherlands, 35 releases) is the artist Bandcamp names for Palm Mall; the latest entry is She Dreamed of Earth. What is mallsoft? The sound of an empty shopping mall covers the branch.

If you wanted a beat

haircuts for men (US, 109 releases, 2012–2026) shares QINGDAO MARKET with Macintosh Plus and is filed under barber beats, a rhythmic offshoot; start with 1991, and see If you like haircuts for men: artists to try next for his circle. DARK DESIRE (US, 43 releases) takes the same line: VANITY RENEGADE. For groove, future funk in Bandcamp's account is built on 1970s disco and soul samples;[3] the archive files 46664, by Princess Commodore 64, as future funk, and Future funk: vaporwave's dance floor, explained explains the branch. If you liked the slowed-down feel, What is slushwave? Vaporwave stretched into ambient is the next stop, and What are eccojams? The looped, slowed edits that started vaporwave goes to the root.

Two oddities

chris††† (US, 21 releases, 2013–2023) has a ten-year compilation, ten years later (2013 - 2023), on business casual, and it shows how the style aged. INTERNET CLUB (US, 18 releases, 2011–2020) is an early name from the same year as Floral Shoppe: THOUSAND ONE HALF STARS. The archive also carries a community tag, "floral shoppe-like cover art", on one anonymous release, 愛のための買い物.

These come from tags and labels. Branch names such as mallsoft and barber beats are contested, so treat them as signposts. The wider story is in What is vaporwave? A guide to the internet's slowed-down mall music, and the biggest source of tapes in the archive is DMT Tapes FL, profiled at DMT Tapes FL: label profile and where to start. Browse all vaporwave releases by branch and year.

Questions people ask

Is Macintosh Plus the same artist as Vektroid?

Macintosh Plus is one of several aliases of the artist Ramona Xavier, who also records as Vektroid, according to Portland Monthly. In the archive each alias is its own entry.

Is vaporwave the same as synthwave?

No. Vaporwave, as Bandcamp Daily maps it, grows out of slowed, looped samples of old pop; synthwave mostly writes new music with 1980s-style synths. Our Synthwave vs vaporwave: same neon, different music page sets out the differences.

Why does the archive show so few Macintosh Plus records?

The archive lists five releases under the Macintosh Plus name, from 2011 to 2021. It only counts releases with a listen link, and it starts in 2000.
