business casual is a Pittsburgh vaporwave label that puts out a new record every Friday. In the Frekvenci archive it lists 167 releases from 113 artists between 2011 and 2026, mostly vaporwave and future funk, with a small but real synthwave side: 16 of the listed releases sit in the synthwave family.
How did a spiteful demo turn into a weekly label?
Bandcamp Daily's 2017 profile says the label began in 2013, the work of John Zobele, who also records as chris†††. He told the site it started "out of spite" after a demo he sent to another label went unanswered.[1] It now runs in Pittsburgh on a fixed schedule: a release every Friday at noon Eastern, plus a tape package called the BizBox every other month. Zobele called the schedule "more or less a full-time job".[1] Cassettes are the main physical format.[1]
In May 2023 Bandcamp Daily marked ten years with the compilation BIZCAS10, about three hours long and described by the reviewer as "an endless DJ mix" of shopping-mall funk.[2] If the cassette side interests you, our guide to Synthwave on vinyl, cassette and CD: formats in the data covers how these formats fit the wider scene.
What do 167 releases look like by year?
One quirk first. The archive dates its earliest business casual listing to 2011, two years before the label's stated start. That is the date on file, which can be an older original or a reissue date, and we do not read it as the founding year.

The curve is steadier than at other big vaporwave labels. After 6 releases in 2013 it reaches 16 in 2014 and 17 in 2015, dips to 7 in 2016, then runs between 11 and 20: 11 in 2017, 18 in 2018, 20 in 2019, 17 in 2020 and 19 in 2021. From 2022 the listed count falls to between 7 and 9 a year. That is well below one release a week, and the reason is how we list: only releases with a working listen link and good match confidence make it in. The label's own pace is much faster than our counts.
Albums dominate: 147 of the 167 listed releases, against 15 EPs and 3 compilations.
How wide is the sound?
The tags give the mix. Future funk is the biggest main tag with 65 releases, then plain vaporwave with 37, synthwave with 14, barber beats with 13 (see the What is barber beats? The vaporwave micro-genre named after one prolific artist), and smaller counts for vaportrap (6) and utopian virtual (5), plus a few nu-disco, chillwave and synthpop records. The co-tags add plunderphonics on 69. Bandcamp Daily's family tree describes future funk as hedonistic music built on 1970s disco and soul samples, and utopian virtual as crisp, clean sounds from 1990s computing and commerce.[3] Zobele calls the label's experimental releases its backbone, and says the catalogue also draws on city pop, synthwave and disco.[1]

The synthwave side is the part this site cares about. Of the 167 listed releases, 133 are vaporwave-family, 16 synthwave, 11 popwave and 7 dreamwave. Those records carry a mix of synthwave, synthpop, nu-disco and chillwave tags, and future funk names such as 3D BLAST and bl00dwave sit beside them. For the style itself, see our Future funk: vaporwave's dance floor, explained and What is vaporwave? A guide to the internet's slowed-down mall music. Where country is known (69% of releases), the United States leads with 60, then the United Kingdom with 11 and Brazil with 9.
Which artists make up the roster?
The most-released artist is Windows 96 (Brazil, 6 listed releases here out of 26). Next, with 4 each, come chris††† (the founder's alias), bl00dwave (Italy), Diskette Park, Soul▲Craft, VANITAS命死 (Belgium) and Roex. Bandcamp Daily's 2017 profile also names FrankJavCee, Corp, Darksleep, Desired and Fla.mingo, and its 2023 review lists MACROSS 82-99 and haircuts for men.[1][2] haircuts for men has 2 business casual releases out of 109 in the archive; our If you like haircuts for men: artists to try next page covers him separately.

Is the Friday habit still going?
Yes, as far as we can tell. The archive lists business casual releases in 2026, so the label counts as active. The 2023 anniversary review treats the Friday release as an established habit,[2] and we found nothing suggesting it has stopped. Our recent yearly counts are far below weekly, again because of how we list.
For a sibling at the other end of the scale, see DMT Tapes FL: label profile and where to start. More on the label's catalogue is on the business casual label page, and the whole field is in Synthwave labels worth knowing, and which are still active.
