Werkstatt Recordings: label profile and where to start

One Greek label, three catalogues: synthwave, dark electro and italo disco. Here is what the Frekvenci archive shows of Werkstatt Recordings, year by year, and ten records to begin with.

Werkstatt Recordings is an independent label in Athens, Greece, that has released electronic synth music since 2009. In the Frekvenci archive it lists 136 releases from 77 artists, and the data shows three catalogues in one: a core of synthwave, a large darkwave and darksynth side, and a smaller italo disco strand.

How does Werkstatt describe itself?

The label calls itself a "Department of Global Underground Electronic Synth Music since 2009", based in Athens.[1] Side-Line, a long-running electronic-music site, calls it a small independent Greek label and describes its sound as EBM, dark pop and electro-wave, with a fascination for vintage electronic music.[3] A 2022 Side-Line review of a label compilation names its owner as Toxic Razor and lists synth wave, minimal electro and EBM among its styles, on digital, CD and cassette.[2] That description and ours do not match perfectly: in our tag data synthwave is the biggest strand, because the archive maps tags to a different genre tree than a reviewer would.

The catalogue in numbers

The archive lists releases from 2009 to 2024, with a clear shape: a slow start, a burst, and a long tail.

Only one release is listed for each of 2009 and 2010, four for 2011, then 16 in 2012. The peak is 2013, with 28 listed releases. The following years hold up (22 in 2014 and in 2015, 18 in 2016) before dropping to 5 in 2017 and a handful a year after that. The most recent listing is 2024. That puts the label in the archive's "quiet" group, as the last section explains.

That status deserves a caveat. The label's own Bandcamp page shows catalogue numbers running up to 363, with no dates, so the label has put out far more than the 136 we list.[1] We list only releases with a working listen link and sufficient confidence in the match, so a long tail of its output is not in our counts.

Format and type give another angle: of the 136 listed, 54 are EPs, 42 are LPs, 22 are singles and 17 fall in the "other" bucket. EPs outnumber albums, which fits a label that keeps its artists on short runs. Nothing is self-released.

The sound: three catalogues

By genre family, 80 listed releases are synthwave, 37 are darksynth and 19 belong to the popwave group. By tag, the list reads: synthwave 77, darkwave 36 and italo disco 17, with a handful of retrowave, synth-pop, darksynth and nu-disco. Add the co-tags (electro 103, darksynth 98, dark wave 33, coldwave 15, EBM 13), and the picture is of a label whose loyalties are with dark, danceable electro rather than the arpeggio-and-sunset end of synthwave.

Be careful with the word darkwave. In the archive's tags it often means the older tradition of gloomy new wave and EBM, not the modern horror-tinged darksynth. Both appear on Werkstatt's roster, which is why the numbers above overlap; Darkwave vs darksynth: two dark genres people mix up explains the difference, and Italo disco and synthwave: the 1980s sound that keeps coming back covers the dance strand.

Country coverage is 67% for this label, and among those releases Greek artists lead with 58, then the United States with 7 and the United Kingdom with 4. It is a local scene label with a few outsiders, such as GosT from the US, and Finland's Megahammer.

Key artists

One act dominates: Beatbox Machinery, with 35 of its 36 listed releases on Werkstatt. The other leaders are Resistance of Independent Music (6), Metal Disco (5) and Arcade Metropolis (4 of 16), all Greek. Kriistal Ann and Evanton (two each on the label) are also Greek. Side-Line's 2017 review picks out Kriistal Ann, Resistance of Independent Music, Paradox Obscur, Metal Disco, Geometry Combat, Obsidian Radioactive and Dawnrazor as its featured acts.[3]

Is Werkstatt still releasing?

Probably, but our data is thin. The archive's last listing is 2024 (one release), which files the label as "quiet": nothing in the last year, but something within three. The label's own Bandcamp page lists catalogue entries up to number 363, among them new records by Beatbox Machinery and TEKC 909, with no dates shown.[1] Check the page itself for what is current. If you are looking for sound rather than status, the Dark station (94.6 FM) is the closest Frekvenci station; the Werkstatt label page lists everything we have. For another label with a dark streak, see Blood Music; for the label field overall, Synthwave labels worth knowing, and which are still active. The darker side is also covered in the What is darksynth? The heavy, horror-lit side of synthwave.
