Signalwave, also called broken transmission, is vaporwave assembled from old radio and television broadcasts, cut together so the result sounds like someone turning a dial. The Frekvenci archive lists 1,505 signalwave releases by 485 artists. The odd number is not the total but the concentration: a single tape label accounts for 45% of the tag.
What is signalwave?
Bandcamp Daily's map of vaporwave sub-genres files broken transmission, also called signalwave, as vaporwave at its rawest. Nothing about it has to sound harsh. What defines it is a method: long-lost radio and TV clips stacked one after another, chiefly Japanese in origin, with some American material.[1] The stack imitates channel hopping, and the article reads the resulting disorientation and information overload as a comment on consumer culture, as it does for mallsoft.[1] It names Vektroid's Fuji Grid TV EX as an example.[1]
Vaporwave itself took shape between 2010 and 2011, and the first signalwave entry in our archive comes from the same period.[3] The name is slippery. The source tags on 1,342 of the 1,505 releases say "broken transmission", and only 555 say "signalwave", so most of these records were tagged with the older, longer word. We treat them as one genre, as Bandcamp does.
How a broadcast collage is made
The technique is sampling in its plainest form. A producer records or downloads scraps of programmes, adverts, jingles and announcements, cuts them short and lines them up, usually with little processing beyond level matching, some reverb and tape hiss. Set it beside an eccojam, which loops a few seconds of one pop song until it hypnotises, and the difference is plain: the interest here is the sequence, one voice giving way to another before it can finish a sentence.
No artist interview we could find walks through the making of a particular signalwave record, so this description rests on the Bandcamp entry and on the sound. What the archive does show is the company the tag keeps. Alongside broken transmission, the most frequent companions are slushwave (983 releases), future funk (420), outsider ambient (410), alternative vaporwave (348) and plunderphonics (165). Plunderphonics is the name for music built entirely from existing recordings, so that last tag is a fair hint at the method.
Signalwave, mallsoft and slushwave
Three tags that often share a playlist. Bandcamp Daily describes mallsoft as placid, cavernous ambient music set in an imagined shopping centre, with minimal melodies and field recordings filling the space.[1] That is the opposite of signalwave's crowded surface: mallsoft is one room with the echo left on, signalwave is a dial being turned. Slushwave stretches sounds into slow, heavy washes. Its tag sits on 983 signalwave releases, which says the two are often mixed in one record, with broadcast fragments suspended in long, soft textures.
A quick test for an unfamiliar record: if you can pick out separate voices, adverts or jingles that come and go, think signalwave. If it is one long space with hardly any recognisable source, it belongs with the other two. If you arrived here from synthwave, Synthwave vs vaporwave: same neon, different music explains why these are different worlds. The wider family is mapped on What is vaporwave? A guide to the internet's slowed-down mall music.

The first listed release is from 2011, and the tag grows in steps rather than a smooth line.

There are spikes in 2015 (65 releases, from 5 the year before), 2018 and 2019 (82 and 93), and then a much bigger rise: 191 in 2023, 203 in 2024 and a peak of 480 in 2025, nearly a third of everything in the tag. Jumps like that usually mean a few labels released many records in a short time, and the label table says exactly that. Most releases are albums (798) or EPs (510), with 72 singles.

The label that defines it
DMT Tapes FL has 678 signalwave releases out of 1,192 listed overall, 45% of the whole tag. A second entry, FL Tapes DMT, has 197 signalwave releases and 197 listed in total. The two names look like variants of one label, though we cannot confirm that they are. Combined they would cover 875 of the 1,505 releases, about 58%. Our DMT Tapes FL: label profile and where to start page looks at the whole catalogue.
Outside sources say little about the label. Bandcamp Daily's tape label report of October 2021 notes that DMT Tapes reached its 1000th release in September 2021 and counts it among the labels that inspired the newer label Lost Angles.[2] We found no published history of its founding, so we leave that out.
The practical effect for a listener is that the signalwave tag is, to a large degree, one catalogue. The next labels are far smaller: Hitachi Home Video has 26, FOTOSHOPPE CO. 19 and Freshwater Media 18. Only 77 releases are self-released, which fits a scene carried by tape labels.
Country is known for only 59% of the releases, lower than for most tags. Within that group the United States dominates with 695 releases, then Canada with 37, the Netherlands with 26 and Russia with 23. The most prolific artists include The Pilots from the US with 33 releases and Caliente Mirage with 21.

Common questions about signalwave
Is signalwave the same as broken transmission?
Bandcamp treats them as one genre, and so do we. The two tags describe the same method; "broken transmission" is simply the older and more common label in our data.[1]
Why is 2025 so much bigger than earlier years?
Our data cannot say why. The label table points to a few tape labels releasing many records at once, and tags added after the fact may lift recent years, so treat the spike as a catalogue event more than a sudden wave of new artists.
Is it the same as mallsoft?
No. Mallsoft stays in one imagined space; signalwave jumps between sources. They share a parent, though, and 60 signalwave releases carry the mallsoft tag. Our What is mallsoft? The sound of an empty shopping mall covers the quiet side.
