French synthwave: from French touch to darksynth

France is where most histories place the start of synthwave. Our archive shows what the French scene looks like today: its size, its darker half and the labels behind it.

French synthwave is the 1980s-minded electronic music made by artists from France, and most histories of the genre start the clock in the country in the second half of the 2000s, with Kavinsky and College among the first names.[1] The Frekvenci archive lists 497 French releases in the synthwave family alone. Its darker half is large: the darksynth family has more French releases than the pop-leaning family.

From Paris clubs to Nantes blogs

Two things happened in France before anyone said "synthwave". In the 1990s, Paris clubs turned house music into French touch. The night Respect began in October 1996, with Daft Punk playing the first party, and two years later Cassius and Stardust both had worldwide hits.[3] One of the scene's own producers, Philippe Zdar, later said French touch turned into a recipe that got too easy, a useful reminder that a "French sound" was always a moving target.[3]

The second thing happened online. In April 2007 David Grellier, a Nantes producer who records as College, started the blog behind the Valerie collective, a circle of friends who traded 1980s-flavoured tracks and playlists.[2] A German mp3 blog, Discodust, picked up their music, and a post on College's Teenage Color led the Toronto duo Electric Youth to find the group.[2] College's first album, Secret Diary, came out on 26 November 2008, and the collaboration with Electric Youth, "A Real Hero", ended up on the Drive soundtrack in 2011.[2] Grellier names Italo disco, French touch, Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter among his influences.[2]

Kavinsky belongs to the same period. His "Nightcall" opened Drive, and OutRun followed in 2013. Vincent Belorgey was found dead at his Paris home in July 2026, aged 50.[6] The archive lists 10 releases under the name, and its Kavinsky page carries an in-memoriam note. For the longer story of how those songs reached a mass audience, read How synthwave went mainstream: Drive, Stranger Things and Blinding Lights, against the release numbers.

The dark turn: Carpenter Brut and Blood Music

The most distinctive French contribution arrived a few years later, when producers with metal backgrounds began making electronic records. Carpenter Brut is the clearest case. He grew up on bands such as Iron Maiden and says his metal background shows in how he composes.[4] His three EPs from 2012, 2013 and 2015 were collected as Trilogy, and he runs the label No Quarter Prod with his wife, so no outside company controls his releases.[4] On Leather Teeth (2018) he says he aimed for something lighter and more rock-leaning, citing Judas Priest and 1980s glam metal.[7] Live, he is joined by a metal guitarist and drummer.[7]

Blood Music is the other pillar, and it is not French at all. The Bandcamp Daily profile places the label in Porvoo, Finland, describes how it grew from a metal reissue business, and says its founder bet that metal fans would be curious about horror and science-fiction themes in electronic music.[5] Signing Perturbator took several attempts and led to Dangerous Days in 2014.[5] That is one label's account, but the numbers fit it: French artists account for 15 of Blood Music's 25 listed releases.

What the archive says about the French scene

Artist country is on file for roughly three in five listed releases (14,338 of 23,898), so every French figure below is a floor, not a total. Within that limit the archive has 926 French releases from 240 artists on 214 labels, about 6.5% of everything with a country attached. Of those, 210 are self-released, close to a quarter.

  • 2005 to 2011 is a handful a year. The earliest, Lifelike's 2005 Adventure, carries a synthwave tag, but tags are applied by the community after the fact, so read the early years with care.
  • 2014 is the first jump, to 58 from 26 the year before.
  • The peak is 2020, with 104 releases. Every year from 2016 to 2019 sits between 81 and 93.
  • Since then: 60 in 2021, and 50 to 56 a year through 2024. The 35 for 2025 and 18 for 2026 are partly catalogue lag, and 2026 is a part year.

Paris is by far the most common city on file, with 46 artists, then Nantes (9), Lyon (8) and Bordeaux (5). Another 99 artists give only "France".

Darksynth outweighs pop

Of the French releases, 497 are in the synthwave family, 179 vaporwave, 118 darksynth and 88 popwave. The darksynth tally stands out: 118 releases, with 106 carrying the darkwave tag. A tag count cannot prove a cause, but it matches the metal-to-electronic route described above. For the sound itself, see What is darksynth? The heavy, horror-lit side of synthwave.

Who releases the most

The most prolific French artists are not the household names. AWITW leads with 35 listed releases, 24 of them self-released, with seven in each of 2018 and 2019. Geovarius and Zadig the Jasp follow with 28 each; Zadig's output is packed into 2016 and 2017, with 11 and 13 releases. Lost Colossus shows the newer pattern: 24 listed releases, 12 of them in 2024 alone.

Among the names most listeners know, Carpenter Brut has 19 listed releases, Perturbator 14 and Tommy ’86 24. Tommy '86 is also listed as a label, with all 9 of its listings French.

The labels: mostly not French

French releases are spread across 214 labels. The ones carrying the most mostly sit elsewhere:

No Quarter Prod is the clean case: all 15 of its listed releases are French. Blood Music is 60% French. The rest are international labels whose French catalogue is a slice of a bigger roster, which fits what Do it yourself: how much synthwave is self-released? says about the genre as a whole: much of it travels without a conventional label.
