Swedish synthwave: a small country with a big sound

Sweden gave synthwave Mitch Murder, Lost Years and Sally Shapiro. Our archive shows a scene that leans towards pop, releases a lot by itself, and had a two-artist single-release surge in 2024.

Swedish synthwave leans towards pop. Of 408 listed releases by 99 artists with Sweden on file, about a fifth sit in the pop-leaning family, and the country's best-known names include both a film-score producer, Mitch Murder, and an Italo-disco singer, Sally Shapiro. Behind them is a crowd of mostly self-releasing producers, and the yearly chart has two odd spikes that say more about a few busy people than about the whole country.

Rosso Corsa's Swedes

Two of the early Swedish names came through the same door. Mitch Murder (Johan Bengtsson) began as a hip-hop producer, then turned to 1980s-style music around 2010, and called Rosso Corsa his first "home".[1] The Vehlinggo interview also notes that his music features heavily in Kung Fury, and that his "True Survivor" with David Hasselhoff had about 17 million views against about 19 million for the film when it was written, in mid-2015.[1] Lost Years (Magnus Larsson) is another Rosso Corsa Swede; his music was in the same film and in the series Red Oaks.[2]

Rosso Corsa itself is a Canadian label, run from Victoria, British Columbia by Michael Glover and Garrett Hays, and Bandcamp Daily lists Mitch Murder and Lost Years on its roster.[5] So the Swedish scene's first calling card was exported through a label on the other side of the Atlantic. If you want to follow that thread, Synthwave and 1980s film scores: Carpenter, Vangelis and the sound of the screen covers Kung Fury and its neighbours, and If you like Mitch Murder: artists to try next maps similar records.

The pop side: Parker and Shapiro

Robert Parker is a Swedish producer who says he has made music for more than 20 years, starting with classical piano as a child, then 1990s tracker music, before buying his first analogue synth in 2009.[3] He blends synth-pop, chiptune, disco and synthwave, and credits late-1990s French touch as a main influence; the French side of that story is on our French synthwave: from French touch to darksynth page.[3] The archive lists 16 releases under his name, 10 of them self-released, and seven fall in 2014, the year the Swedish count takes off.

Sally Shapiro is the Italo-disco end. Johan Agebjörn, the producer, noticed her voice while the two sang Christmas carols together, and the stage name echoes 1980s Italo acts such as Valerie Dore, where a singer fronts a team of writers.[6] She keeps her real name private. The Electricity Club described the signing to Italians Do It Better as a surprise, coming after the duo's 2016 retirement.[4] Of her 8 listed releases, 5 are on that label, and all of them date from 2021 onward. The wider story of the style is in Italo disco and synthwave: the 1980s sound that keeps coming back and Synthpop and synthwave: where the 1980s sound meets the revival.

How many Swedish releases are there?

Sweden has 408 listed releases here, from 99 artists on 76 labels, which is 2.8% of releases with a country attached. Because artist country is known for only about three in five releases across the archive, treat this as a minimum. Of the 408, 128 are self-released and 130 are singles, a high singles share for a country with album-focused stars.

  • 2014 is the jump. One listed release in 2013, then 21 in 2014 and 25 in 2015. Robert Parker (7) and El Pedro Vidrio (6) account for 13 of the 2014 total.
  • 2016 and 2018 peak at 45. The years between hold 40, 37, 37 and 38 up to 2021.
  • 2024 matches the peak, at 45, but this is two artists, not a revival. Nightmarrre has 12 listings in 2024 and memorykeeper7 has 13, mostly singles, which together make 25 of the 45.
  • Elsewhere the line sags: 20 in 2022, 23 in 2023, 19 in 2025 and 2 so far in 2026, a part year.

Stockholm has 13 artists on file, Gothenburg 6 and Malmö 4. Another 56 give only "Sweden".

Of the 408 releases, 196 are in the synthwave family, 87 popwave, 66 vaporwave and 54 darksynth. By tag, 52 carry synth-pop and 27 italo disco, against 21 for darksynth and 14 for horrorsynth. A tag count cannot prove a cause, but it fits a country with a long pop tradition. Slushwave, a vaporwave offshoot, is also present: 25 releases carry that tag, including those by Illusionary ドリーミング and memorykeeper7. For where that sound sits, see What is slushwave? Vaporwave stretched into ambient.

Who and where

By listed releases, the busiest acts are mostly newer and mostly small: Nightmarrre (18), Robert Parker (16), El Pedro Vidrio (16), memorykeeper7 (16), Obsession of Time and Illusionary ドリーミング (15 each). The best-known names sit lower: Mitch Murder has 10 listed releases and Sally Shapiro 8. Mitch Murder's pattern is steady, never more than two listings in a year, rather than bursts. Tom Clap is the opposite: 13 listed, all self-released, 7 of them in 2016.

Labels are scattered. NewRetroWave has 12 Swedish releases and PBH Media 12 of 12, Monstercat 9 and Music Super Circus 9. The last is game music: the archive lists eight releases by the Swedish studio Embark Studios, including soundtracks for its game The Finals, which is why a studio appears among the top Swedish artists. In the self-release column, Do it yourself: how much synthwave is self-released? explains why so much of this happens without a label.

Where to go next

The UK has the closest comparison in the vocal and pop-leaning half of the genre; start with Synthwave in the UK: vocal synthwave and vaporwave. For more in this mood, try the Night Drive station (92.0 FM).
