Synthwave labels worth knowing, and which are still active

A label table built from the Frekvenci archive: how many releases each has, when it started, when it last released, and a plain rule for calling it active.

The labels worth knowing in synthwave depend on which synthwave you mean: RetroSynth Records, NewRetroWave and FiXT Neon lead the core genre, Werkstatt Recordings and Cold Transmission Music the dark side, and a few tape labels such as DMT Tapes FL dwarf everyone in vaporwave. This page lists the busiest labels by sound, with the first and last release year for each in the Frekvenci archive and a status rule that tells you whether the label is still putting records out.

How to read this list

The archive holds 23,898 listed releases on 3,490 labels. Those numbers come from MusicBrainz and Discogs, mapped to our genre tree, so every figure below is "listed on Frekvenci", not "everything the label has ever released". A label that sells mostly through its own Bandcamp page may be under-counted; a label with good database coverage may look bigger than it is.

For each label the table shows total listed releases (across all genres), the first year and the last year. The status is a plain rule, applied to the last year on file:

  • ACTIVE: a listed release dated 2025 or 2026.
  • QUIET: the last listed release is from 2023 or 2024.
  • SILENT: nothing listed after 2022.

"Silent" means silent in the archive, not closed. Databases lag by months or years, and labels often release in bursts. We also list labels as they are named in the data: a label that changed its name appears as two rows. The statuses were set on the 18 October 2026 snapshot, and 2026 is a part year.

One more caution: counts reward labels that issue many small releases. A label with 200 singles will outrank one with twenty albums, so read size as a measure of output, not quality.

The big synthwave labels

Synthwave is the largest family in the archive after vaporwave, with 8,105 listed releases on 2,077 labels, and 1,939 of those are self-released, so the labels below sit on top of a large do-it-yourself base.

Three observations. First, the front three, RetroSynth Records, NewRetroWave and FiXT Neon, started in 2011, 2012 and 2016, so the busiest synthwave labels are all products of the 2010s boom, not survivors of an earlier scene. Second, NewRetroWave describes itself as more than a label: its site lists a records label, a radio service, video channels, art, gaming and a store.[1] The archive sees only the label part. Third, FiXT Neon and FiXT Music appear to be related imprints, as do TimeSlaves and TimeSlave Recordings in the pop table below; we list them separately because the data does.

Darksynth and darkwave labels

Darksynth is a much smaller world, with 1,803 listed releases, and its labels are smaller and more focused. Several of them issue almost nothing but dark synth, which is rare among the large synthwave labels.

Blood Music2520122021SILENT

The curious entry is Blood Music, whose roster includes Perturbator and Dan Terminus. It has 25 listed releases and none after 2021, which probably reflects what the databases have indexed, not what the label has done; we mark it SILENT because the rule says so, and we flag it as the likeliest false negative on this page. Meanwhile Cold Transmission Music has 29 of its 31 listed releases in darksynth, and Cobweb Recordings has 17 of 17, so for these labels dark synth is the whole catalogue. Nightride FM, a free online radio, runs separate Darksynth and Horrorsynth channels beside its main synthwave station, which gives a sense of how listeners split the dark side.[2]

Vaporwave's tape labels

Vaporwave is where the archive's label numbers turn extreme. DMT Tapes FL has 1,192 listed releases, about one in twenty of everything in the archive, and Bandcamp Daily reported that it hit its 1000th release in September 2021.[3]

Two points here need care. FL Tapes DMT and DMT Tapes FL look like the same name in a different order. The first listed year of the former is 2023, and nothing in the data proves they are the same label, so we keep them apart. Second, DMT Records, listed with 123 releases dated only 2015 and 2016, may be a sub-label: the data shows it as one big burst and then silence. The same pattern applies to Verbatim Consciousness Recordings, whose 114 releases all fall in 2015 to 2017. A label that releases hundreds of titles in two or three years is a different animal from one that releases a dozen a year for a decade.

Size is not influence. Bandcamp's profile of Dream Catalogue shows how a single London label can define a sound, and Dream Catalogue has 42 listed releases in the archive, a fraction of the giants above.[4] In our dreampunk tag the No Problema labels lead instead. For a deeper look at one family's labels, see our pages on What is signalwave? Vaporwave made from old TV and radio broadcasts and What is barber beats? The vaporwave micro-genre named after one prolific artist.

Pop and italo labels

The pop-leaning family, which holds synth-pop, italo disco and nu-disco, has 2,678 listed releases spread across many imprints, and a few labels are almost entirely pop.

Subterrane Records has all 61 of its listed releases in the pop family, and almost all of them are by one artist, the Australian producer Parralox; it looks as much like an artist's imprint as a label. Hjördis-Britt Åström has 16 of 16 in pop, all dated 2014 to 2020. Italians Do It Better has 24 pop releases among 37 listed. Our page on Italo disco and synthwave: the 1980s sound that keeps coming back has more on the italo side.

Tape labels, digital labels and artist imprints

The tables hide three different business models, and the archive shows them in the numbers. Self-release is the first: 1,939 synthwave releases, 1,786 vaporwave releases and 481 darksynth releases have no label at all, so artists release a large share of the music themselves. A label's real job in that world is curation and reach, not manufacturing.

The second is the high-volume digital or tape label, typical of vaporwave. These labels release albums quickly, often from many artists, and their size makes them look dominant in counts. DMT Tapes FL is the clearest case, and Bandcamp's October 2021 tape label report names it as one of two labels that inspired the newer label Lost Angles.[3]

The third is the artist imprint, where a label exists mostly to release one musician's work. Subterrane Records fits the description in our data, and so do several of the one-genre labels in the dark synth table. These are easy to spot: nearly all of their listed releases are in one genre and by one or two artists.

When you choose a label to follow, ask which model it is. A curator label is worth following for taste; a volume label is worth following for coverage; an artist imprint is worth following only if you like the artist. The label page for each, linked in the tables above, shows the artist list and year-by-year output, so the model is easy to check.

Twelve label profiles to read next

Twelve labels have a full profile of their own on Frekvenci, each with a catalogue chart, key releases and a place to start. They split by what the label is for:

Two other pages place labels in a bigger picture. Physical editions, and which labels press them, are counted in synthwave on vinyl, cassette and CD. How much music comes out with no label at all is the subject of how much synthwave is self-released.

Is it still active?

Of the 34 labels in the tables above, 23 are ACTIVE, 4 are QUIET and 7 are SILENT. The SILENT group splits into two kinds: labels that really did burst and stop, such as the 2015 to 2017 vaporwave imprints, and labels whose latest work has not yet reached the databases.

A better test than the table is the label's own page, where the release list shows when it last had an entry. Look at the last two or three years of releases, check the label's own site or Bandcamp, and consider the type of label: a tape label may release in bursts, a Spotify-first label tends to drop singles, and an artist imprint goes quiet when its artist does.

Running a label? Claim your page

If you run a label listed on Frekvenci, the label desk lets you claim your page, correct the listing and add what the databases are missing. That is the fastest way to turn a SILENT row into an ACTIVE one if your catalogue is current. To explore the lists yourself, the labels index sorts every label by size, genre and year.
