Brazil's vaporwave and synthwave scene in data

Brazil is a small slice of the archive but a vaporwave-heavy one, with a dedicated tape label and a peak in 2021. This is what the data can and cannot show about it.

Brazil's electronic underground, as the Frekvenci archive sees it, is mostly vaporwave and its offshoots. We list 328 releases by 72 artists with Brazil on file, 174 in the vaporwave family and 79 in the synthwave family, and the most common single tag after synthwave is barber beats. We found almost no independent writing on the scene, so this page leans on the archive and on one dedicated label that documents itself.

A tape label that keeps its own record

The clearest anchor is Vaporwave Tapes Brasil. Its Bandcamp page describes it as "sharing vaporwave in Brazil since 2016", lists 123 releases, and, when we opened it on 20 Oct 2026, carried a "Closed" notice.[1] A catalogue number on one release reaches VWTBR_096.[1] The archive lists 79 releases on Vaporwave Tapes Brasil, and 39 of them are by Brazilian artists, so half the catalogue came from elsewhere. It is still the leading label for Brazilian artists in our data by a wide margin, ahead of Business Casual (9 of 167 listings), ATMO (8 of 44), 100% Electronica (7 of 22), Celadon Plaza (7 of 45) and Shatterfoil Industries (6 of 36). Counts are by artist country, so each also releases music from elsewhere.

Vaporwave sits in a family of ten branches in Bandcamp Daily's 2016 map.[2] The Brazilian entries cover several of them; six carry the vaportrap tag and ten future funk. For the longer overview, see What is vaporwave? A guide to the internet's slowed-down mall music.

Barber beats: the tag that Brazil uses a lot

The tag that stands out is barber beats, applied to 73 Brazilian releases, nearly as many as synthwave (75). NTS Radio's guide describes the style as vaporwave's own raw material, lounge pop and glossy 1980s digital sound, with a rhythm section and without the haze, and says the name began as a half-serious label stuck on Haircuts for Men by his label.[3] A student newspaper describes that act's later work as colder and bluer than earlier vaporwave.[4] That is the sound the tag refers to, but it is a community label, not a definition. Our What is barber beats? The vaporwave micro-genre named after one prolific artist and If you like haircuts for men: artists to try next go further. The Brazilian examples include Male Alchemy, a producer with 25 listed releases in a steady run from 2020 to 2026, and VIRTUAL PLEASURE, whose barber-beats sampler is among the picks below.

What the numbers show

Brazil makes up 2.3% of the releases that carry a country, from 54 labels, and only 39 of the 328 are self-released, a low share beside most pages in this series. Artist country is missing for roughly two in five releases overall, so read these figures as a floor.

A few artists explain the shape. Cleeve Morris has 11 listings in 2017 and 10 in 2018, which is 21 of the 65 for those two years. In 2022, VIRTUAL PLEASURE has 13 and default.cfg 8, which together make 21 of the 42. In a scene this size, a few busy artists can lift a year, and the data cannot tell us whether the 2020 to 2022 run reflects more people making music or a few people releasing more.

Cities on file: Rio de Janeiro has 10 artists, São Paulo 9, and Vila Velha and Porto Alegre 2 each. A further 42 give only "Brazil".

The family split is 174 vaporwave, 79 synthwave, 29 darksynth, 24 dreamwave and 22 popwave. By tag, synthwave (75), barber beats (73) and vaporwave (64) are close together, then darkwave (28), chillwave (22), nu-disco (16) and future funk (10). It is a more varied scene than the families suggest: the vaporwave family absorbs several tags, including barber beats. For comparison, the vaporwave family is 73% of releases on the Japan, city pop and vaporwave: the scene in data page and 53% here.
